World No. 34 Donna Vekic has stormed into the semi-finals of the ongoing event in Linz. The 2024 Upper Austria Ladies Linz is a WTA-500 event where the Croatian is the third seed. She overpowered Frenchwoman Clara Burel in straight sets in the quarter-finals.

She won the match 6-0, 7-6(3) to enter the semis for the first time this season. It is also her maiden qualification into the semis in Linz. She is currently playing in her first tournament since her first-round exit at the 2024 Australian Open against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets.

Vekic, however, had a moment of concern during the quarter-final clash. She had a nasty fall on the court in the second set and spent some time on the ground raising concerns among the fans.

However, to her good fortune, it was nothing serious and she could continue playing and went on to win the match in straight sets. Speaking in the on-court interview after her win, she cleared the air about her injury. She revealed having scraped her hand, but reassured the fans that it was nothing serious.

I am still shaking a little bit. But I think I will be fine. Just a couple of nails suffered some injuries, but it’ll be okay. It probably looked more dramatic than it was, but yeah, I will be fine.

An old foe awaits Donna Vekic in the semi-finals

It has been quite a run for the former World No. 19 so far in Linz. She took down the Australian Open’s semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska in the very first round itself. The Ukrainian had made it to the last four of the Major from the qualifiers and has been in supreme form winning her first round in a tight three-setter.

Vekic, however, overpowered her in straight sets with double breadstick (6-1, 6-1). With a bagel over Burel today followed by a tiebreaker, she looks in good form going into the semi-finals.

In the semis, she will now take on second-seeded Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova. This will be the fourth clash between the two ladies. Vekic currently leads the head-to-head 2-1. They last met in the first round of the Stuttgart Open in 2023. All previous encounters between the duo have finished in straight sets.

The second semi-final is yet to be confirmed. Jodie Burrage and Jelena Ostapenko are locked in one of the four quarter-final clashes. Similarly, Elise Mertens and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are set for the final quarter-final clash. The winner of these two matches will meet in the second semis.
