The 2024 Brisbane International kicked off on December 29, 2023, and its final will take place on January 7, 2024. Finally, the much-awaited match between Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem is going to be played today at the Pat Rafter Arena at 3:30 AM (ET). It is a first-round match and the winner will proceed to the round of 16.

Rafael Nadal vs Dominic Thiem: Match Preview 

Nadal will be making his much-awaited comeback to the court in the match against Dominic Thiem. The Spaniard had to sit out the entire 2023 season after getting injured in the 2023 Australian Open. He had to undergo hip flexor surgery, which took him a very long time to recover. Initially, his plan was to return directly to the Australian Open, but he decided to play in the Brisbane International as well for practice. 

Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, had a disappointing campaign in 2023. He last played in the Moselle Open, where he lost to Ugo Humbert in the round of 16. In July, he made it to the final of the Austrian Open in Kitzbuhel but lost to Sebastian Baez. That was his biggest achievement of this season. The Austrian Open, by the way, is an ATP 250 event.

Rafael Nadal vs. Dominic Thiem: Match Prediction 

Nadal and Thiem have a pretty competitive head-to-head record. So far, they have played a total of 15 matches against each other. Nadal has won nine encounters, while Thiem has won six. Their match at the Brisbane International will be their 16th match against each other. Their last two head-to-head matches (both in 2020) were won by Dominic Thiem.

The Spaniard will be the favorite in their upcoming match, mainly because the Austrian Open winner is completely out of form. While it is true that Nadal is coming out of injury, he has seemed to be in good shape in his practice matches, and the 22-time Grand Slam champion should not face any trouble finding a victory in the first round. 

Prediction: Nadal to win in three sets.
