Camila Giorgi dragged into unnecessary controversy with the chair umpire at the French Open 2022 over outfit

Camila Giorgi faced was involved in a bizarre incident in her match against the world number 7, Aryna Sabalenka. The Italian ranked number 30 in the world had played admirably in the French Open 2022. She defeated Shuai Zhang and Yulia Putintseva to set up a third-round meeting with Sabalenka. She was able to stun Sabalenka 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to knock out one of the strong contenders for a title in Paris. But, Giorgi moved on to the fourth round at Stade Roland Garros but was thrashed by the talented Russian, Daria Kasatkina as she lost 2-6, 2-6.

Though Sabalenka had a decent clay-court campaign making into the one final and one semifinal in four tournaments before the French Open, her lack of consistency and a failure to do better at the Roland Garros would hurt her. She will test her luck in the grass season. The shock of an upset was also mixed with a surprising incident that Giorgi went through.

Camila Giorgi faced some drama due to the size of the label on her dress before the match. According to the WTA norm, the sponsor patch shall not exceed four (4) square inches (26 sq. cm) and must be worn on the upper part of the garment. Camila Giorgi’s sponsor logo exceeded the WTA’s norm and so there was some conundrum regarding the same. Giorgi talked to the umpire, saying:
“I don’t have any change, and this is my only dress. I played with it before…”
Though Giorgi’s claim of using the same dress in previous matches was wrong because her previous dresses didn’t have the logo of that size. The umpire Jennifer Zhang was kind enough to tell Giorgi to play with it, and she would talk to the ‘office’ after the match. It was an unnecessary incident that Giorgi was dragged into which might have caused her some agitation in the match.
