Canadian Open director recalls Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka coming to blows and needing to be separated forcefully

Stan Wawrinka and Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has had a spectacular year with his incredible performances as he made his way into his maiden singles final at the Wimbledon Championship and became a champion in the singles as well as in the doubles category at the Citi Open. He had managed to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open but lost to Karen Khachanov in 5-sets despite putting up great performances.

Canadian Open director Eugene Lapierre made a huge revelation when he recalled the time when Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka were not good friends on the Tour and got into an altercation that got into something very serious and ugly that had happened in the year 2015 when he was the tournament director. In order to stabilize the situation, they both had to be separated forcefully.

Kyrgios had said something insulting during the match that did not go down well with Wawrinka as soon as he learned about it and directly went up to the Aussie to confront him in the locker room. Lapierre said “Wawrinka hadn’t heard, but Kyrgios’ comments were on TV because of the microphones on the pitch. In a press conference, a journalist informed him of what had been said. Wawrinka was furious! It’s like he just lost face in front of everyone. He quickly went down to the locker room, where Kyrgios was still. They had to be separated because it risked degenerating quickly.

Kyrgios’s brother Christos further added remarks and said that he would have attacked Wawrinka himself if he would have been there. He said, “The p***k is lucky I wasn’t there or he would have been withdrawing from the next few tournaments“.He further added that the remark “Vekic likes Kokk” wasn’t meant for his girlfriend and was rather referred to Thanassi Kokkinakis and nothing else. Kyrgios was even fined for the incident.

Nick Kyrgios played his first ATP tournament at the Japan Open post the US Open and was going strong with his performances as he had cruised his way into the quarter-finals of the Japan Open and was to face Taylor Fritz but withdrew from the competition opening about some knee related issues.

He had also reached the semi-finals in the doubles match alongside his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis but his decision to withdraw from the tournament also ended his chance at making it into another final of the year in the doubles category. He had lost to the 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the finals of Wimbledon.
