“Can’t say enough wonderful superlatives about her” Coco Gauff’s message on gun violence wins Chris Evert’s heart

Coco Gauff and Chris Evert
World No. 23 Coco Gauff secured her qualification to her first-ever Grand Slam final when she defeated Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-finals of the 2022 French Open. The win makes Coco the youngest French Open finalist since Kim Clijsters in 2001 and the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Maria Sharapova at the 2004 Wimbledon.
On what was possibly Coco’s biggest day of her professional career so far, the 18-year old show great maturity in no wild celebrations and instead put out a message of hope and peace when she was asked to write the customary message on one of the on-ground cameras. Gauff used the opportunity to write, “Peace. End gun violence,” adding a heart and signing her name to it. The message was in light of the recent mass shootings that have crippled her country USA with innocents being indiscriminately gunned down.
“Coco Gauff is not just in her own little bubble”: Chris Evert

Gauff has shown immense maturity in her interviews lately and this interview was no different. With the recent shootings in the school in Texas where 19 kids and 2 teachers lost their lives at the hands of a deranged teenager who opened fire in the classroom, tennis great Chris Evert appreciated the stand by Gauff of speaking and coming to terms quickly that there is a world outside tennis as well.
“That’s the number one issue today in America, the gun violence, so many horrific things have happened as a result, especially to children, and I think she Gauff is very sensitive to this. She is very aware of this and she has evolved as a young woman who is just aware of everything around her, not just in her own little bubble, and she is not self-absorbed thinking about herself all the time.
“But, when she is on the court, she can compartmentalise, and that is the most important thing – for that hour-and-a-half or two in her life – is how she does on the tennis court. But when she is off of it, she is really a normal young lady. She’s just wonderful, I can’t say enough wonderful superlatives about her,” said Evert speaking on Eurosport.
