Carla Suarez Navarro hails Roger Federer’s legacy upon his retirement, says “We all want to be like him”

Carla Suárez Navarro is a former tennis player. She is a legend of women’s tennis. In a recent interview given to a Spanish publication, she talked about Roger Federer. She appreciated what the Swiss great had done for sports and tennis in particular. Federer retired last month in London in the 2022 edition of the Laver Cup.
He played his last match, where he paired up with his long-time rival Rafael Nadal against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock. The Laver Cup, founded in 2017, is played every year between Team Europe and Team World. Top players from the world, according to ATP rankings participate in this event.
“Every person who loves sports loves Roger Federer. That is his legacy. To say that it is the best ever, a common debate, is complicated. What is clear is that he changed tennis today. And the sport.
“When you want to practice one, whatever it is, you want to do it like him, with that elegance, without sweating… As if it didn’t cost him. We all want to be like him,” she said.

Carla Suárez Navarro retired from professional tennis in 2021. She represented Spain in the Billie Jean King Cup and Olympic Games. She won two singles titles and three doubles titles throughout her career. She was a tough opponent to beat on the court and reached as high as World No.6 in the WTA rankings in 2016.
She was diagnosed with cancer in 2016. After fighting for many years with it she finally defeated the disease. She then made up her mind to make a comeback into professional tennis. She even participated in the Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open featuring in the main draw of 2021 but could not advance into the second round in any of the tournaments.
She also participated in the Tokyo Olympic Games where she was defeated by Karolína Plíšková in the second round. She played for Spain in the Billie Jean King and then announced her retirement. She is an inspiration to many as she fought an almost fatal disease to come back and play the sport she always loved.
She is a perfect role model for millions of girls and boys who want to make their career in sports. Also, to those men and women who are afraid of playing any sport just because they are suffering from a disease.
