World No. 1 and teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz has taken the tennis world by storm by upsetting 4 – time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the final at Wimbledon. By doing so, Alcaraz has won his second Grand Slam title and has handed Djokovic his first defeat on Centre Court, Wimbledon in 10 years.

Djokovic himself admitted that he did not consider Alcaraz as a big threat to him on grass and that he is surprised over just how well and quickly the Spaniard adjusted to the surface. Interestingly, Alcaraz had played only in two grass-court tournaments leading up to the 2023 grass-court season. He has turned his record on this surface on its head, as he won the titles at Queen’s Championships, and at Wimbledon, riding a 12-match winning streak on the surface.

Alcaraz will leave this grass-court season undefeated on the surface, something nobody else could have fathomed at the beginning. Of his newfound prowess on the surface, Djokovic said in a post–match press conference – “I haven’t played a player like him ever, to be honest. I think people have been talking in the past 12 months or so about his game consisting of certain elements from Roger, Rafa, and myself. I would agree with that.”

Novak further elaborated on his comment, saying, “He’s got basically the best of all three worlds. He’s got this Spanish bull mentality, fighting spirit and incredible defense that we’ve seen with Rafa. I think he’s got some nice sliding backhands, some similarities with my backhands.”

Alcaraz, during his own press conference, dismissed such claims, saying that he only focuses on being a complete player. “It’s wild that Novak Djokovic say that, honestly,” Alcaraz admitted. “But I consider myself a really complete player. I think I have the shots, the strength physically, the strength mentally enough to play in these situations.”

“I don’t know. Probably he’s right,” he continued. “But I don’t want to think about it. I’m going to think that I’m full Carlos Alcaraz, let’s say, but probably I have some great ability from every player.”

Alcaraz’s 2023 keeps getting better. With his victory against Djokovic, he has silenced all doubts about his ability to compete against the greats at the biggest stages.
