Weeks after his quarterfinal elimination at the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz, World No. 2 landed in Buenos Aires for the ATP 250 Argentina Open. This is the first seed second tournament on the South American clay court.

Alcaraz began the season disappointingly after failing to reach the last four of the Australian Open after he was shockingly defeated by German Alexander Zverev. He is hoping to put that aside in Argentina.

The Murcia native arrived in Buenos Aires all smiles, as he looks forward to defending the title. The 20-year-old won the Argentina Open title in 2023 after defeating British Cameron Norrie in the final match before achieving the same feat at the Rio de Janeiro ATP 500 in Brazil.

Cameron Norrie, considered the biggest rival of Alcaraz for the Argentina title, is the second seed. However, the last time Alcaraz got a final was at the Cincinnati Open, where he succumbed to a defeat against Serbian Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard had defeated Djokovic in the thrilling five-set epic final in Wimbledon 2023 but was handed revenge in the United States.

This is a big opportunity for the Murcia native to return to another tournament final after six months away. Alcaraz’s opener matchup in Buenos Aires will be in the second round against a qualifier.

Argentina Open to feature top players like Carlos Alcaraz and Cameron Norrie

The Argentina Open will feature top opponents. Nicholas Jarry, who won both the Santiago and the Geneva Open last year, is the third seed.

Top Argentine players like Francisco Cerundolo and Sebastian Baez will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing outing at the Cordoba Open. Cerundolo suffered a surprising first-round defeat to Jaume Munar at the Cordoba Open, despite being the top seed.

Sebastian Baez, who won the Cordoba Open last year, failed to defend his crown. However, he was the only Argentine to get past the quarterfinal stage after Tomas Etcheverry’s loss in the last eight.

Frenchman Arthur Fils will also feature at the Buenos Aires Open. Fils who reached the semifinals of the Auckland Open and quarterfinals in Hong Kong, already this season, looks likely to be the only teenager to give Carlos Alcaraz a run for money if they eventually meet.

Stan Wawrinka is the latest addition to the list. The World No. 57 has been having a run of bad form since late last year. But with a good record of finishing as runners-up in the competition in 2013, the Swiss can cause an upset.
