Former World No. 3 and Roger Federer’s coach Ivan Ljubicic revealed in a recent interview to Sport Klub that he is very impressed with the Spanish tennis sensation and current World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. Ljubicic remarked that the 20-year-old’s exploits on Tour lately have been nothing short of exceptional and that he is a generational talent.

Ljubicic noted the Spaniard’s recent dominance on all three surfaces and has been all praises for him. “He has brought another dimension to tennis, a dimension young players lacked in the last 10-20 years,” Ljubicic said.

Speaking of Alcaraz’s semifinal loss against Novak Djokovic at the recently concluded French Open, Ljubicic said “In that match against Novak, he wasn’t as creative and fluid as he usually is,” but went on to remark that “He is positive and he is something we haven’t seen so far – some sort of ‘sick’ combination of Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal.”

Tennis today is a much more physical sport than it used to be. Energetic movement and footwork on the court is becoming just as important as having powerful and efficient groundstrokes. Carlos Alcaraz excels in all these departments. His athleticism and foot speed have drawn comparisons with Spanish icon Rafael Nadal, and his lateral movement on the court is much akin to that of Novak Djokovic. Similarly, his booming groundstrokes with the ability to hit exquisite dropshots have earned him comparisons to Roger Federer.

At the rate Alcaraz is pushing his physical limits at such a young age, many believe he could be prone to injury issues later in his career. Ljubicic expressed concern over the same, saying,“I just hope that his body holds up, because he is putting extreme demands on his body at this moment”.

Alcaraz has an excellent coach in the form of former World No. 1 and fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero. The dynamic between the duo is apparent whenever Alcaraz speaks of him in interviews or when celebrating winning a title. With a coach like Juan backing him, the sky is the limit for Alcaraz.

Carlos is fresh off winning his first title on grass at the Queen’s Club Championships. He will enter Wimbledon as the World No. 1, dethroning Novak Djokovic thanks to his title run.
