Carlos Alcaraz has truly initiated a major shift in men’s tennis over the past year. The Spaniard achieved the biggest pinnacle in the sport when he defeated none other than tennis great Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2023 Wimbledon last month. The 20-year-old will now look to defend his title at the 2023 US Open, which gets underway later this month.
French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou has assessed the current situation regarding the Novak Djokovic-Carlos Alcaraz rivalry. He believes that the two rivals will compete for the big titles in the near future. However, more interestingly, the Frenchman does not believe that Carlos Alcaraz will stop the Serbian from winning any more Grand Slam titles.
For context, Novak Djokovic was handed his first defeat on Centre Court in over a decade and his first defeat at the Championships in six years. The 36-year-old went down fighting in five sets in the finals, as he was left searching for answers in the final set. Patrick Mouratoglou believes that the Serbian lost the final due to the pressure he was put under by his opponent.
“I feel that being this ultimate favourite all the time and playing for history, it has to be a burden. So now in a way that Carlos is a favourite as well, Novak will feel more free the next time he plays him. Will he (Alcaraz) prevent Novak from winning any (more) Grand Slams? I don’t think so. Will he take some and Novak takes some? I think so,” said the French tennis coach.

Patrick Mouratoglou claims that Novak Djokovic was under more pressure at the Wimbledon finals, given that he was chasing a part of history. However, he expects Carlos Alcaraz to face the heat next time around, considering the fact that he has already defeated the Serbian in the finals before.
Novak Djokovic has made his return to the United States after a one-year forced hiatus. The 36-year-old has kickstarted his preparations in his bid to claim a fourth US Open title. He was defeated in the US Open finals in 2021, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. This defeat eventually stopped him from completing the Calendar Slam. The 23-time Grand Slam title champion will look to avenge his defeat in the Wimbledon finals and settle scores with Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open.
