It has been a really solid 2023 for Carlos Alcaraz. After he had to miss the Australian Open earlier this year, he covered up well by winning multiple Master’s 1000 events and a few others. He also rose to World Number 1 and was the favorite to win the French Open.
However, he failed to cross the huge Novak Djokovic barrier after he lost to the Serb in 4 sets at the semi-final stage. With the loss, he passed on the number 1 baton back to Djokovic. However, this Queens Club event which is the perfect warm-up event for Wimbledon provides the Spaniard an opportunity to regain the top spot in the world rankings.
After his win over Sebastian Korda in the semi-finals, the Spaniard was asked whether or not he would target the number 1 ranking. To this, the Spanish sensation said, “Honesty at the beginning of the week I didn’t know that I could recover the number 1 ranking. When I won yesterday, in the press conference they told me [about this] and I was like Oh my God that’s extra motivation you know.“
“Now it is something that’s in my mind and I am going to go for it. For me being the top seed at Wimbledon is a dream. And it would be great to recover the top ranking here at Queen’s,” he added.
Alcaraz certainly has his eyes on the number 1 ranking. He will take on Alex De Minaur for the final act as he would love to leave no stone unturned. Can he reign supreme in Queens and enter Wimbledon with the top ranking with him? Only time will tell.
Carlos Alcaraz recovers well after early stutter at Queens
It was never going to be easy for Carlos Alcaraz in his first match at Queen’s. The shift from slow and bouncy to clay to skiddy and low grass was a task for the second-best player in the world too. Those struggles were evident in his round 1 match against Arthur Rinderknech. In fact, he lost the first set but fought his way through a last-set tiebreaker.
This made him more confident about the surface and soon he was back to his best. He went on to defeat Grigor Dimitrov and Sebastien Korda on his way to the final. He will now lock horns with Alex De Minaur in the final and would be favourite to win yet another title in 2023. He will also look to dethrone Novak Djokovic as the world number 1. Will a spectacular finish in Queens set the wheels in motion for Alcaraz and help him at Wimbledon?
