In a recent interview with Tennis Channel, Carlos Alcaraz spoke of his epic Wimbledon triumph against reigning champion Novak Djokovic and about how he is only now coming to terms with the magnitude of his achievement.

โ€œI have to wait and think about it for a while, because it’s going to be difficult to realize that I won Wimbledon. Such a great tournament. It was my dream. So right now, I still can’t believe it,โ€ the Spaniard said with his usual bright smile.

After the match, Djokovic had no dearth of praise for the young Spaniard. Djokovic went on to say that he has never faced a player like him in his career. He then drew parallels between Alcarazโ€™s game and that of members of the big 3, including him. Djokovic claims that Alcaraz possesses the strengths of all three players while having no visible weaknesses.

In his interview, however, Alcaraz decided to downplay such comparisons with the big 3. He clarified that he is only trying to improve his own game. โ€œHe (Novak Djokovic) told us that he has not played against a player like me, something that is difficult to realize. I didnโ€™t take some pieces from the big 3. I just try to be myself. But probably, Iโ€™m a little bit of everyone.โ€

There are many factors that made the Wimbledon final between Alcaraz and Djokovic so important. The premise of the match-up โ€“ a 20-year-old prodigy at the top of the tennis world trying to prove his mettle on the biggest stage against a veteran who is likely to go down as the greatest of all time, is what makes the match, and Alcarazโ€™s victory so appealing.

There is also the fact that Alcaraz failed to bring forth his best at the duoโ€™s previous encounter at the French Open. This likely gave Alcaraz even more incentive to challenge Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, a stage Djokovic has hardly ever lost in.

That match, in hindsight, can also be seen as one which witnessed a โ€˜change-of-guardโ€™ between the tennis royalty of Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal and the future of tennis, the most prominent name of which is Alcaraz.

Alcaraz is sure to gain a huge confidence boost following his victory. Now that he knows he can deliver under pressure on the biggest stages of tennis, he will be more comfortable competing against the likes of Djokovic in the future.
