Mats Wilander shared his excitement about watching the Alcaraz vs Rune quarter-final, comparing this match similar to a Djokovic-Nadal clash.

Former tennis player Mats Wilander has given his take on the quarter-final matchup between Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune in the ongoing Wimbledon Championships, referring to it as an absolutely stellar contest. He also compared it to the battle between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, stating that the intensity of both matches is very similar. Wilander also added that he is very excited to see how the match fares on Wednesday with two of the tournament favorites going head-to-head with one another.

Wilander, talking to EuroSport, gave his reasons on why he looks up to this match as the Djokovic-Nadal facsimile saying, “We could potentially be looking at the Nadal and Djokovic match-up here because of the tennis and the mindset. They are both great competitors and they don’t mind the big stage, in fact, they love the big stage. This is a brilliant match. The foot speed around the court, that’s why I bring up Nadal and Djokovic.”

He also talked about how great Nadal and Djokovic are referring to them as great athletes and also how fast they are in terms of movements on the court. He said, ” They are such great athletes, both of them, the strength in their legs, they move so well, which is why I think they are doing well on grass. They hit drop shots, they come to the net, they are very complete.”

How have Alcaraz and Rune performed until now in the competition?

Carlos Alcaraz came to the competition as the top-seeded player and he did not disappoint at all, not only beating all the opponents he faced but also dominating them completely. He played Jeremy Chardy in the first round, followed by his second-round win against Alexandre Muller. He didn’t drop a single set until his third-round battle against Nicolas Jarry whom he beat 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, and in his last match, he came back from one set down to beat Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Holger Rune, on the other hand, has also fared quite well, having beaten homeboy George Loffhagen in the first round, then went on to beat Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round. In the third-round matchup against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, he faced a heavy task, having recovered from a set down in the third set to win the intensive match by 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7. In his last match, he booked the quarter-final spot by beating Grigor Dimitrov by 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 to set up a dream clash against Alcaraz.
