Carlos Alcaraz praised the 23 times Grand Slam title-holder, Novak Djokovic in a recently held press conference. This is not the first time the two arch-rivals have heaped praises onto each other.
20-year-old Alcaraz is hailed by many as the only one in the younger lineup of tennis players who gives the Serb a fierce competition every time. Discussing his rivalry with Djokovic, the Spaniard stated, “Well, obviously he’s one of the greatest of all time from our sport. No doubts about it. Everything he does in the game is unbelievable,“ while discussing what he gets out of playing against the tennis star in a previous press conference.
Djokovic’s third-round match against another Serb, Laslo Djere, shocked the tennis world. The 36-year-old lost the first two sets against his opponent. Winning the subsequent three sets was the only way for Djokovic to make a comeback into the game. And he did exactly that. On being asked if he had watched Djokovic’s latest match, Alcaraz replied that he went to bed after watching the first two sets. He added he was quite sure that Djokovic would bounce back and win.
When asked by a reporter to comment on Djokovic’s fighting spirit, Alcaraz stated, “He(Djokovic) shows once again that he is one of the best in history.“ In admiration of the World No. 2, Alcaraz further added, “36 years old. Doing the same things he(Djokovic) did when he was 20. He’s incredible. You have to give credit about that. It’s something admirable.”
The duo had their latest match a couple of weeks prior at the Finals of the Cincinnati Open. The Serb won the title defeating Alcaraz in a close match.
Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz showdown on the cards?
Since both of them are the top two seeds, an Alcaraz vs. Djokovic clash is possible only when the two manage to reach the finals. Carlos Alcaraz looks forward to defending his title while Djokovic is eyeing his 24th Grand Slam win. Fans are hoping for another clash between the two for a Grand Slam title run at the ongoing US Open. Especially after their epic showdown at the Cincinnati Masters.
The duo’s rivalry has taken center stage this year. Legendary tennis figure, Alex Corretja emphasized that Alcaraz’s setback at the previous tournament in Ohio was a lesson for the 20-year-old that can come in handy. In a possible on-court encounter between the top two seeds at the Flushing Meadows, Corretja believes Alcaraz has the upper hand.
A few players, including Djokovic himself and Alexander Zverev, have pointed out that assuming the finals will be held between Carlos and Novak, and the media build-up around this possibility is disrespectful to the other players competing.
