The current tennis world is seeing a young 20-year-old take the rankings by storm. With his classic tennis, Carlos Alcaraz is breaking records day in and day out. In his most recent outing at the Queen’s Club Championship, the Spaniard not only won his first title on grass but also overtook Novak Djokovic as the number 1.
That’s not it though. He also crossed the Serb when it comes to the highest win percentage in finals before turning 21.
Alcaraz who lost his number 1 ranking to Djokovic at the French Open semi-finals after he limped off the court, started his Grass tenure in fine fashion. He beat the likes of Arthur Rinderknech, Grigor Dimitrov, Sebastian Korda and Alex De Minaur. His title run made him attain a win percentage of 78.6 before turning 21. He overtook Djokovic whose win percentage was 76.9.
The 20-year-old Spaniard has played a total of 14 finals so far and has remarkably won 11 of them. The leader in this record still is Rafael Nadal with an unreal win percentage of 84.6. However, overtaking Djokovic will mean a great deal for the Spaniard.
The week did start with a little stutter for the Spaniard after he lost the first set in his first-round match. He finally won it in a third-set tiebreak. Since then he has looked like a different player on the grass and didn’t lose a single set on his way to glory. A great week for him in all as he won his 11th Career title. Can he carry this form into Wimbledon?
Can Carlos Alcaraz better his record at the championships?
Carlos Alcaraz is considered to be a clay court specialist and a solid counter punch on the Hard courts. His game on the grass hasn’t been that fluent. It seems now though that he has finally found his feet on the surface with the remarkable Queen’s Club run. The challenge for him is the big Wimbledon Trophy. He will very well know about the dominance of the Big Four in London in the last 20 years.
For a fact, Alcaraz wasn’t even born the last time someone outside of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray had won this event. He would love to be the one to break the rut and announce the new era. Can he do it? He may have to dig deep with the likes of Djokovic in the draw and will have to stay as focused as possible.
