There is no doubt whatsoever that World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is the next ‘big thing’ in men’s tennis. The defending US Open champion is in the form of his life, winning matches consistently for fun against the world’s best. Many youngsters are seeing Alcaraz as their next inspiration and are aspiring to be like the Spaniard. However, the 20-year-old himself had a fan moment in March at the 2023 Miami Open.
This happened when Jimmy Butler, the Miami Heats’ star player, visited the tennis arena in Miami where the ATP 1000 event took place to watch Alcaraz’s matches. For the uninitiated, the Miami Heat are one of the most famous basketball teams not just in the NBA but in the entire world, and Butler is one of their world-renowned stars.
Alcaraz disclosed his reaction to seeing Butler watching his matches in Miami in an interview with MARCA last month. Expressing his shock, the young sensation said, “He was in Buenos Aires on vacation and said he wanted to see my final. He is a tennis fan. I was like, ‘s**t, Jimmy wants to come to see my match,” and I was like in shock.“
“From then on, we had a good relationship. In Miami, he came to see me play several matches. I went to see him once, and I loved it. We kept talking a little bit, and I kept following him,” he further added.

Carlos Alcaraz is one of the favorites to win the 2023 French Open

After a semifinal exit at the Miami Open, Alcaraz showed tremendous form in his home country, winning the 2023 Barcelona Open (an ATP 500 event) and the 2023 Madrid Masters (an ATP 1000 event) back-to-back.
As a result of this, the Catalan will enter the Grand Slam at Roland Garros as one of the top favorites to clinch the men’s singles title. Though he exited early in the very next tournament in Rome, Alcaraz will see it as a minor blip and nothing serious.
Moreover, luck is also on his side as Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the tournament, Novak Djokovic is in patchy form of late, and none of the young stars except Holger Rune and Casper Ruud seem challenging enough to defeat Alcaraz, especially on clay surfaces. It certainly seems as if it’s Alcaraz’s Grand Slam to lose.
