It’s all over at Wimbledon 2023. Over for Novak Djokovic‘s ambition of an eighth title, but the start of something even bigger. 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is now the latest champion at the Grand Slam becoming the first non-Big-4 player in more than two decades to win the glorious title. Alcaraz won the title with a 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 scoreline after 4 hours and 43 minutes.
Djokovic was the four-time defending champion going for his 24th Major. He had possibly the best start ever in a Wimbledon final taking a 5-0 lead. Alcaraz finally held his serve to make it 5-1 but Djokovic quickly closed the first set. Alcaraz dug deep in the second set to win a thrilling tiebreaker to split the match wide open. The third set was something neither player anticipated.
Alcaraz was quick to a 3-1 lead. With Djokovic serving, the game had possibly everything. Shot clock violation for Djokovic, 13 deuces between the two, 32 points contested, and finally after seven break points, Alcaraz won the game. To compare, he won the next game in mere 130 seconds to make it 5-1 before breaking Djokovic again to take a lead in the finals for the first time.
Djokovic then took an extended bathroom break that lasted for nearly eight minutes. Alcaraz tried pressuring the chair umpire but no point penalty was charged against the Serb despite the Centre Court crowd booing the 23-time Major winner. The fourth set was another tight affair as both men continued to get back and forth against each other as Djokovic needed the set to stay alive and Alcaraz needed it to win the title.
The fifth set was no different as both kept things tight. Alcaraz broke the Serb early to make it 3-1 putting all the pressure on the Serb. Djokovic did well to not concede any more break and so did Alcaraz. The Spaniard served for the Championship at 5-4.

Carlos Alcaraz continues to reign on the Top as a massive month awaits
The title decider tonight would also decide who sits atop the ATP singles rankings. With the win, Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed his place as the World No. 1 for a few more weeks. He is now the third youngest man to win the Wimbledon title behind Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg. The German was 17 years and 227 days in 1985 when he clinched his first. Borg was 20 years and 27 days old when he won in 1976. Alcaraz achieves the feat at 20 years and 72 days.
Novak Djokovic will continue as the World No. 2 but the pressure is now fully on the Spaniard. Having won the 2022 US Open, the month of August will be a difficult one for Alcaraz as he defends a lot of points. As for Nole, he didn’t compete in the USA last year and has no points to defend. How Djokovic plans his US Open leg will be interesting to see as he would be eager to get back at the young gun.
As for Alcaraz, he is certainly at the top of the world. Wimbledon title, a two-time Grand Slam winner, World No. 1, and a win over Djokovic in the finals of Wimbledon, the kid has certainly achieved more than what the rest of the Tour is yet to do.
