Over the last year,  Novak Djokovic has established a nail-biting rivalry against the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. Although the pair have only faced each other four times, sharing the spoils, the matches have been memorable. Their most recent encounter was the longest Masters 1000 final at Cincinnati. The new world no.1 avenged his loss in the Wimbledon final by edging the 3-set encounter that lasted 4 hours.

The world no.2 put on a spine-tingling performance to beat the favorite, Novak Djokovic, in the final at Wimbledon earlier this year. The 20-year-old arguably bested Djokovic at his own game. Alcaraz trumped Djokovic in a five-set marathon exhibiting exceptional court coverage and shot variation.

Djokovic scripted history at the US Open 2023, winning his 24th Grand Slam. The Serbian also regained the world no.1 ranking from Alcaraz. The 36-year-old recently spoke about the Spaniard at the Davis Cup. Showering praise on the 2-time Grand Slam champ, Novak said, “Carlos is already at that level. It’s only a few years that he has been playing on the top level & he is already a two-time Grand Slam winner, number one in the world. It’s amazing to achieve so much so far, just at 19 or 20 years of age. He is the youngest number one in the world to finish number one at the end of the season. You can say he is a special guy, no doubt about it that he has an incredible career ahead of him if he stays healthy, if he continues to maintain this level of tennis.”

Novak went on to predict a huge future ahead for the world no.2. “It’s not going to be guaranteed that you make the history of the sport because you have thousands of other players who would want to beat him.. But he is one of the most impressive players I have faced in my life. No doubt, complete in every aspect & also a very nice guy, a great family, and a great team so he is a perfect ambassador of our sport so far and if he is going to continue like this, he is going to carry tennis,” Djokovic explained.

Marion Bartoli shares interesting thoughts on Novak Djokovic’s nationality

2013 Wimbledon Champion Marion Bartoli made a stunning claim that Djokovic being Serbian makes him under-appreciated. “If he were American, he would have a statue in every city! The fact that he is Serbian means that he is not as publicized,” Bartoli said, in an interview with the French publication RMCLive.

Earlier, Djokovic had made a somewhat similar claim. “I leave that to you guys and all the others, whether I deserve to be a part of that debate. One thing is a fact, though – if I wasn’t from Serbia, I’d have been glorified on a sporting level many years ago, especially in the west,” Djokovic said, talking about the GOAT debate.

Djokovic is currently playing for Serbia in the Davis Cup in Valencia. The 36-year-old continued his winning ways with a 6-3, 6-4 Davis Cup win against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Friday. Djokovic’s victory clinched the tie for Serbia and secured the nation its place in the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga in November. Earlier today the Serb announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Shanghai Masters.
