World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz dedicated his first win at the Shanghai Masters to Jose Manuel Madrona, a coach at the Ferrero Academy. Alcaraz, who is currently coached by Juan Carlos Ferrero, made this tribute to Madrona, who had lost his leg in a motorcycle accident.
The young Spaniard has been seeking coaching from compatriot Ferrero for a while now. The coach has the Juan Carlos (JC) Ferrero Tennis Academy in Alicante, Spain. Jose Manuel Madrona has been a coach at the academy for a while now. However, an unfortunate accident led to Madrona struggling for his life. However, while the impact of the crash was too heavy, he survived the accident. Unfortunately, while his life was spared, he lost his leg in the accident.
Alcaraz had known the coach personally during his tenure at the Ferrero Academy. The two-time Grand Slam champion has been a part of the Ferrero Academy since he was 16. Since then, he has seen immense success. From two Grand Slams to four Masters 1000 titles and everything in between, his performance has been very commendable. Alcaraz won his first match at the Shanghai Masters against Gregoire Barrere while gunning for a fifth Masters 1000 title.
After this win, the Spaniard wrote, “Madrona, this victory is for you,” on the camera. While the former World No. 1 has had a very successful couple of seasons, he has shown audiences that he still has not forgotten his roots. While Madrona might have played a very small part in Alcaraz’s life, it is clear that his presence impacted the youngster.
Carlos Alcaraz advances to the third round of the Shanghai Masters
A two-time Grand Slam champion advances to the third round of the Shanghai Masters. The Spaniard, given his top seed, had a first-round bye. He had directly entered the second round, where he faced Gregoire Barrere, defeating the Frenchman with a score of 6-2, 7-5.
The Spaniard had the first set without much trouble. However, when they entered the second set, Barrere seemed to pick up the pace. While the Frenchman put up a good fight in the second set, it was ultimately Alcaraz who won the match.
In the third round, he will face the winner of the second-round match between Mikhail Kukushkin and Dan Evans. The Shanghai Masters 2023 will be Alcaraz’s first time at the tournament. He will aim to grasp the tile on his debut at the tournament.
