After one of the finest victories late in his long years on tour, Bulgarian Former World No.3 Grigor Dimitrov has earned the praises of the young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz whom he defeated in a thrilling three-setter in Shanghai Masters. The final score was 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Alcaraz hyped the level Dimitrov had shown in their encounter after the match as he said Dimitrov had kept him on ropes throughout the match.
Alcaraz said after the match, “The truth is that I have the feeling that he played very well. His level was quite above the previous matches we played against each other. He did not have a single up or down. I thought that after the first set, which was hard for him, it would turn out very differently. I made some mistakes that didn’t matter at the beginning of the second set & he didn’t let me get back into the match.”
The Spaniard continued on how he struggled to find the rhythm against a strong opponent who showed no signs of weakness throughout the second and third set, “I tried at all times to find a way to apply my tennis, but I wasn’t able to. I was defending the whole game, without giving myself the opportunity to play as aggressively as I would have liked.”
Confident Carlos Alcaraz hopes to bounce back
In the press conference following a tough defeat, the Spanish World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz was confident enough to say that he is ready to learn from mistakes and come back stronger. He seemed daring enough to not take the loss into his head as he clearly knows that there is enough time left for him to be back where he belong.
The young Spaniard said, “I have to learn to maintain concentration in moments like the start of the second set, where I was not good at all. I always say that you can learn much more from defeats than from victories, I take many lessons to be better. I have to work more on some things if I want to beat the best. Before competing again, I am going to train in several aspects that I have been able to learn a lot from in this match.”
Alcaraz has had some issues with hamstring as we could see from his movements right after the Wimbledon title. These might have led to his continuous poor runs in the tournaments before and after the US Open. Though the Spaniard has not admitted that he has health issues, there have been strong rumors about the young Spaniard’s health conditions.
