Playing his debut at the Shanghai Masters, Carlos Alcaraz has now progressed to the next round of the tournament after beating Grégoire Barrère in straight sets. A video has been posted by Tennis TV, where Alcaraz was seen pulling a trick shot during the match point of the game.
Alcaraz had a lead in the first set, winning easily by 6-2. During the second set, the French emerged as a hurdle for the youngster, but Alcaraz made a comeback and eventually defeated Barrere.
At the match point, Alcaraz took the serve. On Barrere’s return, the young Spanish smashes a ‘behind-the-back‘ shot, which confuses the French, and he hits the ball outside the court, giving Alcaraz the winning point. As expected, the crowd soon erupted in applause as Alcaraz celebrated his triumph.
The Spaniard won the first set on his first set point, 6-2, and appeared to be on his way to victory. With no break opportunities in the first six games, Barrere demonstrated amazing tenacity to make the second set a closer match.
The Frenchman’s resistance was eventually broken in the seventh game.
Carlos Alcaraz commented on his debut win
Carlos Alcaraz commented on his debut win, comparing that his opponent was better and more prepared. Barrere entered the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nuno Borges of Portugal.

During the on-court interview he said, “had just one practice here in Shanghai and then the match. I think he was more used to these conditions. He had more practice, a match in the bag, so it was really difficult to adapt my game in a new city, new conditions, but I think I did pretty well.”
That’s not all; as per the young sensation himself, he learned from his failures in Beijing in order to perform better in the future. The 20-year-old will likely face Daniel Evans next. He will have more chances of winning the match, as he has won three of his previous four fights against Evans.
