Spanish tennis player Albert Ramos-Vinolas became the recent addition to the list of tennis players and enthusiasts to shower praises on the current World No.2, Carlos Alcaraz. After former tennis professional and eight-time Singles Major winner Jimmy Connors, Albert Ramos-Vinolas gave an inside scoop on the Wimbledon champ’s gameplay in a media interview.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who is currently competing in the last leg of the Challenger tour, lost his second-round match at the Malaga Open to America’s Emilio Nava. In an interview with Punto de Break, the 35-year-old was asked if he had taken note of the strengths and weaknesses of his compatriot, Carlos Alcaraz, having played him before.
“Difficult defect when he is the number two in the world so young, and I have already played several times,” Ramos-Vinolas said as he talked about the 20-year-old’s weaknesses.
“As for his virtues, he has a very, very high ball speed, higher than most players, he is very fast, very skilled,” the Spaniard stated. “Apart from the fact that he does everything very well, when he is about to lose, he raises the level a little more and scores incredible points,” the 35-year-old added as he gave a unique insight into Alcaraz’s gameplay.
The former World No.17 Ramos-Vinolas has squared off against Carlos Alcaraz on 4 previous occasions in the last three years. Most notably, the two engaged in a five-set thriller in their second-round meet at the French Open last year. The two met on-court once again this year in Rome in their first-round encounter. As the No.2 seed, Alcaraz reigned supreme yet again, ousting his opponent with a 6-4, 6-1 score.
Carlos Alcaraz misses chance to dethrone Novak Djokovic to claim the World No.1 crown
Spanish ace Carlos Alcaraz rues the missed opportunity to dethrone Novak Djokovic as the World No.1 as the 20-year-old bowed out of the Shanghai Masters after losing to Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday. Alcaraz, aiming to win his first title since Wimbledon, lost in three sets despite being 1-0 up against Dimitrov. He lost 7-5, 2-6, 4-6 over three sets.
Earlier, the Spaniard failed to go past Jannik Sinner at the China Open in their semifinal round clash. The two back-to-back losses mean Alcaraz will be trailing by 2,240 points when the ATP updates the rankings next Monday.
“I want to do my best in Basel, which will be my next tournament. I know that the goal of finishing number 1 this year has been very complicated for me with these last results. It is going to be difficult, but I want to try. I will try to win the next events,” he stated in the post-match press conference.
