Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz returned to the ATP Tour with a bang! He is yet to play a single professional match this season. Due to his absence from important tournaments, such as the United Cup 2023 and the Australian Open 2023, he dropped points and had to concede No.1 spot to Novak Djokovic. He is currently ranked No.2 in the ATP rankings.
However, he is hopeful that despite lagging behind he will be able to catch up in the rest of the tournaments this season. Meanwhile, his competition is also preparing for the challenge of the young Spaniard. He is well aware of it.
Eminent sports journalist Mario Boccardi shared an excerpt of Carlos Alcaraz’s interview in which he talks about the challenges he will face this season on social media. He counted Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas as his competitors for the top spot. However, he did not discount other tennis players who may also challenge him.
“Carlos Alcaraz: “I’m fighting for #1 with Djokovic, Tsitsipas, they are the closest, but there is a very wide range of players who can win Grand Slams and who may be fighting for #1: there are seven or eight players who would deserve it and who have the level to be at the top.”,” the caption read.
The 19-year old defeated Cameron Norrie in the final of the Argentina Open 2023. The scoreline read 6-3, 7-5 in favor of Carlos Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz reveals his plans for this season
Carlos Alcaraz played his last professional match against Holger Rune in the semi-finals of the Paris Masters 2022. He had to abandon the match because of an injury. Soon it was found that he had an abdominal tear which led him to stay out of action for quite some time. He is making a comeback of sorts by playing in the Argentina Open.
Before he started his campaign here, he gave an interview in which he talked about his mindset.
“It’ll be my first tournament since I picked up the injury in Paris. It’s been four months since then. But I always arrive thinking about winning and wanting to win, even though it won’t be easy after such a long time without competing,” he said.
He has signed up for many tournaments to prepare well before the sunshine doubles in the USA begin. He is the defending champion of Miami Open. He defeated Casper Ruud in the final of this tournament last year.
