Carlos Alcaraz relishing on the opportunity to join Rafael Nadal as only other Spaniard to win Wimbledon as he takes on Novak Djokovic in the finals
Alcaraz could become the second Spanish Wimbeldon Champion after Nadal.
Carlos Alcaraz (L-Tennis World) and Rafael Nadal (R-Wimbledon)
Carlos Alcaraz is relishing the opportunity to emulate Rafael Nadal and become the second Spanish Wimbledon Champion. Facing off against the world’s third-ranked player, Daniil Medvedev, Alcaraz showcased his mettle in one of the most significant matches of his budding career. With an astonishing display of attacking tennis, Alcaraz dismantled Medvedev’s game with precision, beating the Russian 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
As a result, Alcaraz has earned a spot in his first-ever Wimbledon final alongside Novak Djokovic. Rafael Nadal won his first Wimbledon title in 2008, defeating Roger Federer in the finals, becoming the first-ever Spaniard to do so. He reclaimed the title in 2010, defeating Tomáš Berdych in the finals. Since then, no other player from the country has won the tournament. Alcaraz now has the opportunity to do just that on Sunday against the seven-time champion.
When asked about this possibility, he said, “Well, gives you extra motivation. I think it’s more special to play final against a legend from our sport. Well, if I win, it could be amazing for me – not only win a Wimbledon title but do it against Novak would be super special.”
He then went on to declare Novak Djokovic the best player in the world and that he’d have to beat him to claim that title himself.
“But I always say if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Novak is one of them. Would be great if I’ll do it.” The Spaniard will be hoping to become the first man since Andy Murray in 2013 to defeat Djokovic in the Wimbledon finals and claim his second Grand Slam title.
Carlos Alcaraz: Road to the final
Carlos Alcaraz came into the tournament as the first seed and one of the favorites to win the tournament. He defeated unseeded Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to go through to the second round. There, he beat Alexandre Muller 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 with ease. In the third round, he won against 25th-ranked Nicolas Jarry 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Next, he defeated 2021 finalist Matteo Berretini 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. In the quarter-finals, he dominantly won against world no. six Holger Rune, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. Finally, he reached the semi-finals putting on one of his best performances, beating third-ranked Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
This led to him setting up a cracking final with current world no.2 Novak Djokovic. He will be hoping to continue his winning run against the Serbian and claim his first Wimbledon title ever.
