Young Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz started right where he left before his injury-forced absence. The 19-year-old overpowered Cameron Norrie 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday to claim the Argentina Open title. This was Alcaraz’s debut in the tournament and he made it quite memorable.

The 2022 US Open champion went more than three months without a competitive match because of abdominal and hamstring injuries. Just before the scheduled Australian Open, he announced his withdrawal. And now watching his run in Buenos Aires, it seems he was never away.

Throughout the week, Alcaraz had a comfortable run and the final was no different. Norrie took the lead in the first set 3-2, but Spaniard produced a relentless display of power and stopped only at the finish. This masterclass capped the tremendous outing where he lost only one set in four matches.

“I felt very comfortable playing the final,” Alcaraz said post-match. “I knew that it was going to be really difficult, I started really focussed on what I had to do at the beginning, my game, my level. This is the level that I have to play in finals.”

The Spaniard expressed his happiness after making a successful comeback. “It’s been a great week for me, a dream week after a long time with no competition. Coming to Buenos Aires and showing the level I showed is amazing and really special. It has been an emotional week too,” he acknowledged.

Alcaraz is the first teenager to win the Argentina Open. And with the title win in the Buenos Aires ATP 250 event, Alcaraz moved within 590 points of No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the latest rankings. Though there is no imminent threat to the reign of the Serb, Alcaraz has made his intentions clear to reclaim the lost spot.

“I’m fighting for No. 1 with Djokovic, and Tsitsipas, they are the closest, but there is a very wide range of players who can win Grand Slams and who may be fighting for No. There are seven or eight players who would deserve it and who have the level to be at the top,” Alcaraz said after the match.
