Novak Djokovic takes back the World No.1 spot from Carlos Alcaraz following his win against Alexandre Muller. However, with Alcaraz being the defending champion, 2,000 points will be dropped from his roster when the rankings are recalculated on Monday. Since Djokovic did not play in the tournament, he gained no points. Thus, no points will be dropped for the Serbian great.
This scenario comfortably places Novak at World No. 1, at least till the end of the US Open. When the young Spaniard was asked recently if getting back the No.1 spot still matters to him, he said, “Well, right now it’s a goal for me honestly. I said before that we are having a really good battle for the No. 1, Novak and I.”
“I knew that he was going to recover the No. 1 after US Open,” he acknowledged. While to some players, being at the top spot on the board once, the rest does not matter, Alcaraz revealed that it is not the case with him. He still holds the dream of being No.1 close to his heart.
“When the tournament is over, I will try to recover as soon as possible. That’s my goal. I am working for that,” he said as he established that getting back the spot will be his first and foremost goal once the tournament is over.
