Carlos Alcaraz speaks of the difficulty of life on the sidelines amidst a long break from tennis
A hungry Carlos awaits for the rest of the season to commence after missing out on the AO 2023 due to injury

Former world No.1, Carlos Alcaraz opens up about his difficulty of life off the court due to the long break from tennis. The Spaniard had a sensational 2022 with his first-ever Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open and also four other ATP tour titles. He had some pretty big wins as a teenager winning against Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in consecutive matches. He created history as the youngest player to reach world No.1 after winning his first Major title.
However, he suffered an abdominal tear requiring a six-week layoff, forcing him to end his season early. He withdrew from the ATP tour Finals and Davis Cup finals at the end of the year. Nevertheless, he ended the year as the world No.1. Earlier this year he came into the Australian Open to win the title and was also considered as the title favorite. But he got injured in the right leg in training just a few days before the commencement of the Major.
Earlier today, speaking in an interview with the Spanish press agency EFE he said “I really want to compete again. More than ever because I have never spent so much time without playing tennis. It’s hard. But this break has been useful for me to understand what I can do better – both on and off the pitch.”
Carlos is eager to return to the court and play. He was gutted to miss the Australian Open Grand Slam. With the clay season coming, he will be eyeing defending his famous home tour in Madrid. He comes into the season with fresh legs and rejuvenated.
Carlos Alcaraz slips to world No.2 behind Novak Djokovic
After his withdrawal from the Australian Open, Carlos was at risk of losing his place to the seeded players right below him. And as expected, Novak won the Major and not only registered his 22nd Grand Slam title win but also rose to the top spot. He came into the tournament as a fourth seed and won his tenth Major at Melbourne Park.
However, Nole is just around 300 points away from Carlos and this is what Carlos is targeting in the coming tournaments. With Novak’s hamstring injury during the Australian Open, it’s very unlikely that he participates in all the ATP tours. Carlos on the other hand is now focused on the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires starting next week. Overall, it will be an interesting battle for the top spot this year between Nole and Carlos.
