“I don’t consider myself a favorite,” Carlos Alcaraz talks of his chances at Indian Wells as the World No 1 rank is up for grabs
Carlos Alcaraz does not believe in calling himself one of the favorites to win the title at Indian Wells Open.

The world No.2, Carlos Alcaraz, made a strategic decision to begin his 2023 season on clay courts. This decision appears to have been a wise one, as he has had relatively positive results so far. He managed to win the title at the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires, marking a successful return to competition after the injury break. Although he missed out on the title at the ATP 500 event in Rio, Alcaraz performed admirably and reached the final.
Alcaraz’s decision to prioritize clay courts at the start of the season was likely motivated by his natural affinity for the surface. Clay courts tend to be slower than hard courts, which suits Alcaraz’s playing style. His strong footwork and ability to slide on clay courts give him an advantage over some of his opponents.
Speaking in the press-conference before the tournament, he said, “I feel very good right now. Today (Wednesday) was the first practice with players registered in the tournament, I played some points. I feel very good. I took a few days off and it did me a lot of good. Now I’m ready. Of course playing a Masters 1000 is always difficult and I really want to get a good result here. I also like this tournament. For me, winning the tournament and becoming number 1 again is a very good goal and I really want to achieve it.”
He added, “On hard I think I’m a very good tennis player, so I’ll give it a try. I don’t consider myself a favorite to win the tournament because it’s been a long time since I played hard. Of course, there are plenty of great players in this roster who have a chance of winning the tournament. I would say that I have my chances of winning the tournament and I will try to take them.”
Carlos Alcaraz is all set for the Indian Wells Open
This week, Alcaraz has a lot at stake as he aims to win his third Masters 1000 title and regain his position at the top of the ATP Rankings. Although he may not be considered a favorite in the desert, the Spanish player is highly motivated to pursue victory in both aspects of the competition.
Although he missed out on the title at the ATP 500 event in Rio, Alcaraz performed admirably and reached the final. Unfortunately, a minor thigh injury suffered during the tournament contributed to his defeat in the final match.
Having recently experienced a similar situation, the Spaniard knows what it takes to rise to the occasion. His victory in the 2022 US Open propelled him to the number-one spot in the world rankings for the first time in September of that year. Although he has already secured a title in 2023 by winning his first tournament of the season in Buenos Aires, Alcaraz is now focused on claiming his first hard-court title since his breakthrough win in New York.
