Carlos Alcaraz topples Novak Djokovic to reclaim the World No. 1 spot as he matches Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s record after winning Indian Wells
A heartbreak for Daniil Medvedev as he was dominated by the Spaniard to win his third Masters 1000 title.
Carlos Alcaraz and the Big-3 at the Indian Wells
Carlos Alcaraz ended Daniil Medvedev’s 19-match win streak in the Indian Wells final on Sunday, defeating him 6-3 6-2 in a dominant performance. As a result, Alcaraz will surpass Novak Djokovic in the rankings and reclaim the world number-one spot. He also achieved a remarkable feat in men’s tennis, joining Rafael Nadal as the only players to win at least three ATP Masters 1000 titles while still a teenager.
Before Alcaraz’s victory at the 2023 Indian Wells, Nadal was the sole member of this exclusive club, but now the two Spaniards share this distinction. In addition, Alcaraz accomplished two more remarkable feats at the Indian Wells tournament. Firstly, he became the first male player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win the tournament without losing a single set. Secondly, he also became the youngest male player ever to win the Indian Wells title.
Despite being just 19 years old, Alcaraz has already won the Miami Open and Madrid Masters titles last season. His 20th birthday is coming up in May. With Djokovic absent from the Miami Open as well, Alcaraz has an excellent opportunity to successfully defend his title.
During the third round of the Indian Wells tournament, Alcaraz reached another impressive milestone by earning his 100th career match victory. He accomplished this feat in the second-fastest time, with only John McEnroe achieving it faster. The clay court season kicks of with Monte Carlo Masters in the second week of April before the French Open. If he could win these two upcoming ATP 1000 tournaments, he will have 5 Masters 1000 titles before turning 20.
Carlos Alcaraz crushes Daniil Medvedev in style to win the Indian Wells Open
In the Indian Wells final featuring two first-time finalists, Carlos Alcaraz had a fantastic beginning to the match. He secured an early break and went ahead 2-0, while also maintaining a tight hold on his serve, surrendering only six points in the entire first set. Alcaraz continued to exert pressure on Medvedev by making him run from one corner of the court to another.
He broke Medvedev’s serve again to establish a dominant 4-0 lead, barely breaking a sweat as he cruised to a comfortable victory in just 70 minutes, without facing any break points. Alcaraz showcased his impressive skills by striking 19 winners and committing only 10 unforced errors throughout the match. He kept Daniil Medvedev on his toes with a mix of serve-and-volley and drop shots.
Despite facing a tough opponent, the teenager managed to keep his composure and never allowed Medvedev to earn a single break point. Alcaraz took commanding leads of 3-0 in the first set and 4-0 in the second, ultimately securing a convincing victory.
