The withdrawal of Rafael Nadal from the Monte Carlo Masters was quickly followed by his fellow Spanish player, Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz cited “soreness” from his Miami semi-final loss as the reason for his withdrawal. This leaves Novak Djokovic as the clear favorite to win his third Monte Carlo title, as his strongest challengers on clay are not participating.

Alcaraz has been instructed by his doctor to postpone the beginning of his clay season. The young player had a remarkable performance in the sunshine swing, as he won the Indian Wells and made it to the semi-finals of the Miami Open, where he was defeated by Jannik Sinner. The second-ranked tennis player in the world has disclosed that he was examined by a physician after returning home from the United States and was advised against participating in Monte Carlo, which is only five days away. This major event marks the beginning of the clay court season.

Alcaraz gave credit to Sinner’s exceptional performance, especially in the third set, and admitted that the Italian player was superior to him on the day.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic regained his top position in the ATP rankings after a brief period of 14 days, courtesy of Carlos Alcaraz’s loss in the Miami Open semi-final. Alcaraz had displaced Djokovic from the top spot after winning the Indian Wells, but he had to relinquish the position after failing to defend his Miami Open title.

Carlos Alcaraz needed to win both Indian Wells and Miami Open titles to retain his world number-one ranking, as he was defending 1000 points from the previous year. Unfortunately, he lost to Jannik Sinner in the Miami Open semi-finals, which allowed Novak Djokovic to reclaim the top spot in the ATP rankings. Alcaraz had become world number one for the first time after winning the 2022 US Open, but his absence from the 2023 Australian Open due to injury and Djokovic’s victory in Melbourne enabled the Serbian player to regain his world number one position in January.

Novak Djokovic is set to commence his 381st week as the world number one in ATP rankings after regaining the top spot from Carlos Alcaraz. The Serbian is scheduled to return to the ATP Tour in the Monte-Carlo Masters from April 9. With this latest achievement, Djokovic is now ahead of Roger Federer, who had spent 310 weeks as world number one, by 71 weeks on the all-time list. The competition for the world number one title will restart at the Monte Carlo tournament, where Alcaraz, currently ranked No. 2, will also be participating. Djokovic currently holds a 380-point lead over Alcaraz, with 7160 points to Alcaraz’s 6780.
