Juan Carlos Ferrero has been a vital force behind Carlos Alcaraz’s rise to the top. Formerly a World No. 1 himself, Ferrero won the French Open in 2003. However, ever since his playing career has come to an end, the Spaniard has been involved with coaching players.
Prior to his stint with Alcaraz, which started in 2019, Ferrero was the coach of the German player and current World No. 5 Alexander Zverev.
In his recent time in Argentina, the 44-year-old opened up about the young Spaniard’s rise to the top. Besides, Ferrero also had some kind words for World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and the Swiss maestro Roger Federer.
The Spaniard remarked on the rise of Alcaraz in his career after winning the Grand Slams and the ATP Masters, along with its consequences, such as increased publicity and money. He also appreciated the family of the 20-year-old for the way they have managed Alcaraz.
Being the way it is, is totally a credit to the family. But obviously, the team around it must be made up of humble, hardworking people. And if at any time he deviates along with the family, he must be put on the right track. He's going through big things, obviously, he's getting a lot of money. But these are things that the family is handling very well and they're doing their homework well.Juan Carlos Ferrero said to La Nacion.
Juan Carlos Ferrero describes the differences in coaching Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz
Zverev and Alcaraz are two of the highest-performing players in the current generation. With the experience of coaching both of them, Ferrero shared the differences he felt during the stint with both of them. With Zverev, he had little room to make changes.
On the other hand, with Alcaraz, he was able to cook the player with his own hands. Besides, he added that he embedded certain changes in Alcaraz, who already had impressive characteristics.
However, Alcaraz is going through a rough patch currently. The Spaniard was unable to defend his Argentina Open title as he lost to Nicolas Jerry in the semis.
