Carlos Alcaraz’s comparison with Roger Federer gets refuted by coach Marc Barbier who believes the World No. 1 “has the means to change the game”
Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz has been one of the biggest revelations in the sport in recent years. The 19-year old in his first-ever full season managed to win the 2022 US Open and thereby became the youngest World No. 1 on the ATP Tour.
Marc Barbier, coach of French youngster Hugo Gaston, recently talked about Alcaraz and the constant comparisons between the teen and Roger Federer. While Alcaraz remains unfortunate to see Federer retire before he could play him, the comparisons have been long done and Barbier bashed those.
“There is no point in comparing, Carlos is simply Carlos: he is both a great striker and a great defender. He is a reflection of everything that can be done in modern tennis. On the one hand, he embodies the Spanish values, with great solidity from the baseline, and on the other, he has a lot of offensive options in his game.
“With a lot of creativity and a very good hand, he’s the archetypal player who doesn’t really have any limits. At least, technically, he doesn’t. We don’t know how far he will go, but it’s certain that he has the means to change the game, or at least to bring new things to the game,” said Barbier as per Tennis Majors.

“Carlos Alcaraz is much more complete than Rafael Nadal at the same age,”: Marc Barbier
With Alcaraz breaking records at will, the comparisons with the Big-3 are always going on. Barbier also eventually made the comparison of Alcaraz with another Big-3 member, Rafael Nadal, Alcaraz’s compatriot and one of his idols growing up alongside Federer.
“I think he is much more complete than Rafael Nadal at the same age. That doesn’t mean that he will have the same record. We don’t know how he will react to success. Maybe after a few Grand Slams, he’ll be tired or injured. But if everything goes well, for him it’s no limit,” added Barbier.
While Alcaraz has himself stayed away from these comparisons out of respect for the legends of the game, it is certainly exciting to have a youngster challenging the records of the tennis greats.
