Caroline Wozniacki looked the best version of herself as she qualified for round three of the US Open 2023. The Danish professional continued her fairytale comeback as she got past Petra Kvitova in a battle of former World No. 1s. Wozniacki defeated her old rival and 11th seed 7-5, 7-6(5) at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This was the first meeting between the pair since 2018.
The two-time US Open finalist was accompanied courtside by her husband and dad, who is also making a comeback as her coach. “I think he was enjoying the relaxed life at home, helping out with the grand kids. Now, he’s definitely going to go grey again. Missing match points right & left,” said the former Australian Open champion in an on-court interview with Rennae Stubbs.
In her biggest win since her return from retirement, the Dane missed out on two match points, leading the set to a tie-break. Earning two more match points in the tie-break, Wozniacki converted her fourth to earn her first Top 20 win since beating Kvitova in Singapore at the 2018 Finals.
“It feels amazing to beat such an amazing player and champion like Petra,” Wozniacki said.Two-time Grand Slam champion Kvitova still holds an 8-7 lead in their head-to-head, but this time around, Wozniacki got the better of this year’s WTA 1000 Miami champion.
Caroline Wozniacki thought that she would never return to play at the Arthur Ashe Court Stadium
Wozniacki has been one of the main stories in the tennis world since announcing her intent to end a three-year retirement, during which she gave birth to two children, and resume her professional career at the Omnium Banque Nationale in Montréal. “But I still have goals I want to accomplish. I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter your age or role. We decided as a family that it was time. I’m coming back to play, and I can’t wait!”, said the Dane, announcing her return to tennis.
After a subdued start at the Montreal and Cincinnati masters, Wozniacki is showing flashes of brilliance at the US Open. “I said it on court, but three years ago if you’d asked me, I didn’t think I was ever going to play on one of those courts again in the US Open, especially a night session. It just feels pretty incredible to be out there and winning a match like that,” Wozniacki said in the on-court interview post her memorable win.
Wozniacki will now have her first meeting with the American Jennifer Brady, who outlasted No.24 seed Magda Linette 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 on Wednesday night.
