When Caroline Wozniacki announced back in 2020 that she would not be playing anymore, it came as a surprise to the entire tennis world. Back then, the Danish international was not taking a break; she was just done with the sport itself. Caroline did not think that she would ever return to court, but in 2023, she changed her decision.
Caroline Wozniacki has had a pretty successful career. She has won one Grand Slam—the 2018 Australian Open and reached the final of the US Open twice.
Moreover, she became World No. 1 twice as well and stayed at the top of the rankings for a total of 71 weeks. This shows how great a player she has always been, and thus her retirement was a big blow to the fans.
Fortunately, she decided to break her retirement and returned to the court again at the 2023 US Open after three and a half years. During this time, she gave birth to two children with her husband, retired NBA star David Lee.
In a recent interview, Caroline Wozniacki revealed the real reason why she had decided to stop playing tennis. She said that she needed a break after so many years, and back then, she did not miss the balls or the court at all.
However, near the beginning of 2023, that changed, and she started to miss the court. Talking about her return, Wozniacki said that things are different now as she has no pressure at all.
I needed a break after playing for so many years and I didn't miss the balls at all. And all of a sudden, I said to myself: 'wow, I miss hitting a clean ball, in the middle of the racket'. You have to go out, sweat, find the right timing and have fun.Caroline Wozniacki said. (H/T: We Love Tennis)
Caroline Wozniacki set to take part in the 2023 Australian Open
Wozniacki’s performance in the US Open was pretty great considering that she was making a comeback after three and a half years. She got eliminated from the tournament only after losing to the eventual champion, Coco Gauff, in the Round of 16, and that too after a sensational three-set battle.
She is now set to take part in the 2024 Australian Open, the only Grand Slam that she has so far won in her career since 2018. Caroline Wozniacki was named on the entry list for the tournament as an unseeded player.
It's really amazing that I have another chance to compete in Australia. When I retired in 2020, I really thought that would be my last tournament, my last match. There was a reason why I decided to retire in Australia: because it is very special for me.Caroline Wozniacki recently said
The Australian Open has always had a special place in her heart, and thus she decided to play her last match in this tournament back in 2020. It will be interesting to see how she performs in its upcoming edition.
