Iga Swiatek has made it to the semifinal of the Indian Wells directly after Caroline Wozniacki retired from the match following a toe injury. The Pole looked confident from the very start of the match and had already won the first set and the first game of the second set when the Danish player gave a walkover. It was visible during the second set that something was seriously wrong and she was struggling on the court. 

However, even without the injury, Iga Swiatek was in a good enough position to comfortably win the match from there. The Pole is one of the favorites to win the 2024 Indian Wells, being the top seed of the tournament on the women’s side of things. Moreover, with Aryna Sabalenka out of the tournament already, the chances of her winning the tournament now seem even clearer.

Caroline Wozniacki recently made her return to tennis after a three year long break that she took due to rheumatoid arthritis. She was focusing on other things in her life and had no plans to make a comeback but eventually changed her mind. After three years, she played her first match in the 2023 Canadian Open against Kimberly Birrell and has been performing pretty decently since then.

Thus, this injury is indeed very unfortunate, as it might force Wozniacki to sit out and rest for a few weeks. After the match was over, Iga Swiatek expressed her sorrow on the match ending the way it did.

“I have huge respect for her. I’m sad it had to finish that way. I hope she’s gonna be recovering and be ready for Miami” she said.

Iga Swiatek is set to face Marta Kostyuk in the semifinals of the 2024 Indian Wells

Iga Swiatek has had a pretty good run in the Indian Wells so far. Being the top seed in the tournament, she is obviously one of the favorites to win the tournament and after beating Caroline Wozniacki, she has now become the first semifinalist of the tournament.

The Polish international will face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the semifinal, who defeated Anastasia Potapova in her last match. Kostyuk and Iga Swiatek have faced each other only once till date and the World No. 1 had won that match pretty convincingly. Swiatek defeated the Ukrainian 6-3, 6-4 in the 2021 French Open and they will meet at the Indian Wells for the first time since then.

In the other semifinal, Coco Gauff will face the winner of the match between Maria Sakkari and Emma Navarro. Thus, if Iga Swiatek makes it to the final, she will battle it out against either of these three players for the title.
