The trial for the domestic violence allegations against tennis player Alexander Zverev will start on May 31, 2024, which will clash with the French Open.

Luckily for Zverev, he will not have to be present for the trials in person, as he was given a penalty order and a fine, and the trial is based on his objection to the order. This keeps him legally innocent, and he cannot be convicted until a final ruling.

To put things in context, a penalty order is given by a judge when they deem that a ruling can be made without going to trial after examining the written evidence properly. It is due to this reason that Zverev will not have to appear in person for the trial.

The French Open will take place between May 26 and June 9 and otherwise, he would have had a problem participating in the tournament. He has made it to the semi-finals of the Grand Slam for three consecutive years now.

Zverev is a member of the ATP player council and many think that, although he has denied the allegations, he should be temporarily removed from the position until his case is resolved in court. Upon being questioned about this, Cameron Norrie and Casper Ruud chose silence on the topic.

I haven't had too much time to think about it, and don't really have an opinion right now. But yeah, I'm not exactly sure how to react to it, so won't give you a good answer. Sorry. You can do another one, if you want.
Ruud said.

British tennis player Cameron Norrie also spoke on the same lines and denied commenting on the issue.

Honestly, I don't really know too much about that and what happened, so tough to comment.

Fans bash Cameron Norrie and Casper Ruud for not having a ‘backbone’ after refusing to comment on the allegations against Alexander Zverev

Cameron Norrie and Casper Ruud were heavily critiqued by the fans on X for choosing silence on the topic of Alexander Zverev’s trial.

They said that the players were the ones who elected Zverev to the ATP player council and thus they are answerable to tough questions like this.

A particular fan also reminded me that Iga Swiatek had no difficulty answering the same question after her match.

Interesting how Swiatek managed to answer the question just fine after her match & she’s didn’t even elect him in the players council like the atp players did.

However, some fans also defended the players and said that they should not be asked questions like this just after they have finished their match, as they are extremely exhausted.
