It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments for Liam Broady at the Wimbledon Championships in his second-round match. The current World No. 142 was drawn against World No. 4, Casper Ruud, just in the second round. Ruud certainly started the match as the heavy favorite. However, as the match went on, the Centre Court crowd was in for something special.
Liam Broady took the first set 6-4. Many felt that it was a positive start, but Ruud was still the one backed to win the match. Ruud responded just like a number 4 would. He bounced back and, in fact, went further with two sets on the trot. That’s when Broady got the crucial break in the fourth set. He tied the match at 2-2. The final set began with Broady once again breaking first.
Ruud quickly fought, bringing up break points but failing to convert as Broady went 2-0 up. Ruud was 40-0 in the third game, but messed up big time to concede the game. From then on, Broady was simply unstoppable.
He raced to a 5-0 lead and eventually ‘bageled’ the No. 4 player. A loss to someone ranked outside the top 100 was certainly going to be embarrassing.

Twitter bashes Casper Ruud after he gets ‘bageled’
After making it to the French Open final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud got a lot of support for his Paris run. However, it has all changed in a month’s time as the crowd has targeted the Norwegian big time after he got ‘bageled’ in front of the British crowd against a local player. Many feel that the Norwegian was unnecessarily hyped after his Paris run and lacks basic consistency.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
Liam Broady will be thrilled, but he will need to be ready for another tricky battle in two days’ time. He will next face Canadian prodigy Denis Shapovalov in the third round. On the other hand, Casper Ruud will want to treat this as a normal loss and won’t want to ponder too much, as apart from this, he has had a decent season. He will now look to put all his focus on the American hard courts and hopefully do well at the US Open.
