The Norwegian World No.4 Casper Ruud didn’t constrain himself from calling the surface in Hamburg one of the worst ever after edging past Sebastian Baez in the opening round in a tight three-setter. The final score was 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Hamburg Open is an ATP-500 event played on clay. Apart from Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev, and defending champion Lorenzo Musetti are the top players of the tournament.
After the first three games of the first set, Casper Ruud said “the worst clay court he played all year on tour” about the surface of the Hamburg Open during the match. This was caught on the mic as well. But the fans on Tennis Twitter don’t seem to be too happy with the Norwegian’s statement. Some called him “always whining” for coming up with excuses, even though he won the match and was leading at that point in time when the incident happened.
Ruud lost in the second round of Wimbledon to Liam Broady but was able to reach the finals of the Swedish Open before losing against Andrey Rublev in straight sets. Ruud will be trying to get his revenge over Rublev in the ongoing Hamburg Open if they meet.

Casper Ruud looks to be back on top of his game

Nobody expected Casper Ruud to make a deep run in Wimbledon. But then again, the current World No.4 player’s second-round exit was also not too much on the cards, that too playing against an unseeded player, Liam Broady. But the American played the right tennis on the grass court to make the London trip a bitter memory for the Viking.
With a lot of critics opening up on his top-5 ranking status after inconsistent runs throughout his career, Ruud will be trying his best in the upcoming hard-court swing to shut up them. It will be interesting to see how the ongoing clay court tournament can re-ignite the magic in him that took him to the finals of the US Open last year and inches closer to the World No.1 ranking.
What Ruud is expected to do, by his fans, is to get the momentum from the remaining clay court tournaments and cruise through the hard court swing before the final showdown at the Flushing Meadows.
