Norwegian World No.3 Casper Ruud says that he is going to take a break from competitive tennis after the commencement of the Australian Open 2023. He points out that he needs a break after a busy year which lasted for more than ten and half months of competitive tennis. His plan is thereby to take a break on February and comeback to the tour on March to play the sunshine double of Indian Wells and Miami masters.

The Norwegian quoted by stating the need of a break and how is he going to utilize that, “A normal calendar year in tennis, if you play a tournament every month, then the season lasts for 10 and a half months. There are no major tournaments in February, and I will therefore use the time to train my physique and actually use that month as a kind of ‘pre-season’, which I would normally have in December.

A lot happened in December, including the trip to South America with Nadal. I have tried to keep it going, and I thought that the Australian Open 2023 will be the last tournament before I take a small tournament break.

The Norwegian continued on how his tour look like if he takes a break, “When I make the change I’m making now, the season will be shortened to eight and a half months. That’s long enough too. It will be exciting to see if it goes well, but it is at least worth a try. When Indian Wells starts at the beginning of March, I am ready for a new year with many hectic months and tournaments in a row.

The World No.3 also stated that he will play less ATP-250 tournaments starting next year. In his words, “It will be good to be able to break up the year a bit like that. I hope it’s a good recipe.I have managed to prove that I can perform well at the highest level and that I will give even greater focus to the biggest tournaments.” (Source: Eurosport)

The Norwegian 24 year old Casper Ruud has finished as the runner-up in 2 of the 4 Grand Slams in 2022. The first final was in French Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal and then against current World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz in US Open.

The above stat itself will be enough to show the consistency of the Norwegian last season. Though he was not able to cross the finishing line, he will be playing in 2023 with a lot of confidence despite losing one of his two singles matches in the United Cup. The haters who were trolling him for showing up only in ATP-250 tournaments has already taken their step back with his breakthrough 2022 season.

The Norwegian has won 3 ATP titles last season –Gstaad (Outdoor/Clay), Geneva (Outdoor/Clay), and Buenos Aires (Outdoor/Clay). With a good run in almost all the tournaments including playing the final against Novak Djokovic in the ATP Finals, Turin, he was able to get a career-high ranking of 2 in September 2022.

He was also awarded ‘Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award‘ by ATP for the first time in his career. Apart from all these, he had a great run of exhibition events in Latin America in October with his idol Rafael Nadal which helped in improving the popularity of the sport in general.
