“Changing the way we deal with mental health” Serena Williams is excited after striking a deal of $5 million with WonderMind

Serena Williams, the former world number one and arguably one of the greatest female athletes in the world, recently created a buzz when she announced her retirement from the professional world of tennis. She will be playing her final matches at the final event of the hard-court swing which is the US Open. It is the place where she first clinched her singles major title in the year 1999 and even choose to bid farewell to her career at the same place in front of her home crowd. She will lead to discovering a new life post-retirement where she can look into other aspects than tennis.

Apart from being a legend in tennis, she is an avid businesswoman and has founded her own company called ‘Serena Ventures‘ which has made various investments in different startups where the majority of her company’s portfolios consist of women and people of color and people are quite comfortable with that work culture. Her keen interest in tech and venture capital is worth cultivating.

Post-retirement, Serena will shift her focus to her family and her venture capital firm. Recently, as per reports, Serena Ventures struck a deal of five million dollars with a mental fitness company Wondermind in the early stage of funding which was joined by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital. Wondermind focuses on mental fitness and promoting routines to maintain health to stay fit physically as well as mentally. Williams has been vocal about mental health issues, including anxiety and postpartum emotions. She’ll be involved in Wondermind content as well and promote the brand as its upcoming projects are made public.

In March 2022, Serena Ventures raised its inaugural fund with a corpus of $111 million to invest in early-stage startups that have founders from diverse and under-represented backgrounds. The fund’s limited partners include Norwest Venture Partners, Capital G (Alphabet’s growth fund), LionTree LLC, Kapor Foundation, and other HNIs.Her fund has invested across sectors, including consumer products, fintech, NFTs, education tech, health and fitness, talent marketplaces, and more. Williams is also passionate about growing her presence in African startups.

Serena is excited to start new beginnings after she retires completely. But before that, she has a few more matches left in her career and is looking forward to making it the best and enjoying it at the same time. She will likely next play at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati ahead of the US Open which starts on 29 August.
