The Credit One Charleston Open has awarded wild cards to former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and World No. 13 Beatriz Haddad Maia. To boost the tournament attraction the organizers have also added Charleston native Shelby Rogers and Clervie Ngounoue as part of its wildcard.
Wozniacki, who has an incredible record, will return to the ATP 500 event as a former champion. The Grand Slam winner had last played at the event in 2019 where she reached the final and has an incredible record of 20 wins in 25 matches in the competition. Despite her struggles this season since her comeback to the tour as a mother, she would be aiming to win the Charleston Open as her first title.
Brazilian Haddad Maia on the other hand impressed last year, winning the 2023 WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. However, this season she has experienced a depleting form. Since reaching the semifinals of the Abu Dhabi Open, the World No. 13 has yet to get past the second round of any tournament. She recently suffered a disappointing defeat against Katie Boutler in the Miami Open.
We are excited to have an impressive lineup of wild cards this year, including former World No. 1 and past champion Caroline Wozniacki, Brazil’s Top 20 trailblazer Beatriz Haddad Maia, and the incredibly promising American young talent, Clervie Ngounoue. Caroline’s return to the courts in Charleston adds a layer of anticipation and nostalgia for our fans, while Beatriz’s breakthrough performances on the tour last year signal she’s a significant contender.said Bob Moran, President of Beemok Sports & Entertainment, as per creditonecharlestonopen.com
Also, the likes of Daria Kasatkina, former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens, and Veronika Kudermetova take the top seed in the 2024 Charleston Open in South Carolina. The tournament runs from March 30 to April 6.
Ons Jabeur aiming to defend Charleston Open title
Ons Jabeur takes the first seed as she aims to defend the Credit One Charleston Open title. The Tunisian defeated Belinda Bencic 7-6 (6), 6-4 to win her first WTA of the 2023 season. Bencic had defeated Jabeur in the 2022 finals and the Tunisian was happy to beat her.
With a great record of 15 wins in 19 matches at the Charleston Open, Jabeur is aiming to defend her title despite her poor form this season. The Tunisian has failed to win her four matches, including a recent shocking defeat to Elina Avanesyan at the Miami Open.
The WTA star was in pain during in Abu Dhabi and Doha Open, but revealed that it was not serious. However, that has failed to improve her game. Bencic, who she defeated last year, also returns to the Charleston Open and will be aiming for revenge.
