45 years ago, Andre Agassi’s ex-wife Brooke Shields stormed into Hollywood with her lead role in Pretty Baby. Pretty Baby was a period drama based on prostitution in New Orleans in 1917. The story revolves around a mother-daughter duo living in the red-light district of Storyville in New Orleans.

In the movie, then 11-year-old Brooke Shields did two nude scenes with an actor way above her age. This was scandalous then and scandalous now. Recently Brooke Shields released a documentary called “Pretty Baby” in which she spoke about how her sexuality was exploited by filmmakers at the time, even though she was just a kid.

Pretty Baby led to an over-sexualization of the actor in the next decade. Most roles the actor landed involved her showcasing her sexuality and also showing skin. At age 15, she starred in the coming-of-age film “Blue Lagoon,” which showed her character discovering her sexuality with her cousin. The director tried sensationalizing the film, saying she lost her virginity on the sets. At age 16, Shields starred in “Endless Love,” which initially got an X rating and was later edited for an R rating.

Young Brooke Shields’ scandalous endeavours

In addition to the movies in quick succession, Brooke Shields did several ad films and appeared on television. New York Times recently did a long editorial on Brook Shields highlighting the problem of sexual and commercial objectification of women in films. It talks about the brief period in which Shields appeared in her infamous Calvin Klein ads.

She would seductively writhe on floor wearing skin tight jeans, saying things her 16 year old brain could not process. In an up close and personal interview with Vogue, she said how she didn’t think of the CK ads to have a sexual undertone. Post the ads release her life became a public hullabaloo. Scores of interviews, where interviewers would condescendingly ask difficult questions like “Are you a virgin?”.

In Andre Agassi‘s autobiography, he had mentioned of the strained relationship the two of them had. In her documentary Pretty Baby, Brooke Shields confirms her challenges with Agassi and the difficult divorce.

She recently also confirmed how Agassi was distraught with her cameo on the sets of Friends. The topsy turvy ride of Brook Shields that started with nudity in her first film has actually culminated into an important question.

What amount of toll does over-sexualization takes on the life of a teen? Shields said she detached herself while acting in mature scenes. She pursued a college education at Princeton, which helped her have a mind of her own. Eventually, she discovered more talents like comedy and dance which helped her break through the stereotype.
