Beijing returns to the ATP calendar as it plays host to the 22nd edition of the ATP 500 China Open at the National Tennis Center. The tournament features one of the most thrilling first-round draws of the 2023 season. Dominic Thiem was the winner of the last version of the event in 2019. The Austrian has given the chance to defend his title a miss as he prepares to play in the ATP 250 Astana Open.
World No. 2 and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz is the first seed for the tournament and faces German pro Yannick Hanfmann in the first round. 2016 China Open champion Andy Murray has a tough first-round encounter against Alex de Minaur. Furthermore, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is the headline absentee at the tournament.
2nd seed for the tournament Daniil Medvedev faces the big-serving American Tommy Paul to begin his Asian Hard Court swing. Medvedev arrives fresh from his decent display at the US Open, where he was beaten in the final by Djokovic. 2019 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded 3rd, faces Czech pro Nicolás Jarry in the Round of 32 clash. The headline clash of the first round will feature 3rd seed Holger Rune up against Canadian pro Felix Auger-Aliassime.
5th seed Alexander Zverev arrives on the back of an ATP 250 title win at the Chengdu Open and faces Argentine Diego Schwartzman. Zhuhai Open champion Karen Khachanov will play Lorenzo Musetti in the first round.
The main draw matches begin on Thursday, 28th September. The prize money for the China Open is US $3,633,875 and the Total Financial Commitment is US $3,798,915.
