Ex-world no. 1 Chris Evert is just completely overcome by Carlos Alcaraz’s return from injury at the Madrid Open. “I’m in awe when I watch him, I’m flabbergasted. I’m just in disbelief at how well he moves, and how he improvises and adapts to certain situations. I think we’re seeing a new level, a higher level of tennis.
The Spaniard has reached the finals of the Madrid Open for the second time in a row. Carlos Alcaraz, who did not lose a set in six Indian Wells matches, lost to Jannik Sinner in a thriller match in Miami Open. Alcaraz skipped the Monte Carlo Masters and came back to clay tournaments by entering and winning the Barcelona Open. Chris Evert added that, “You always think you’ve seen the greatest with Roger and Rafa and Novak, but every decade it just seems like there appears a player that is at even a higher level than the former champion.”
Chris Evert was talking to Eurosport recently when she couldn’t stop praising the 20-year-old Spaniard. Evert was only 19 when she won her first Grand Slam, the same age as Carlos Alcaraz. Though her first was the French Open, Alcaraz won the U.S. Open. But Evert believes the way Alcaraz has bounced back he is going to win the French Open as well.
Chris Evert believes Carlos Alcaraz will elevate tennis to new heights
Chris Evert herself elevated women’s tennis for years at the stretch and stayed on top for 113 weeks. She thinks that the next era of tennis will be led by Carlos Alcaraz.
She is a huge fan of his athleticism and also feels he has a lot of tricks up his sleeves.“I want to say he is the epitome of what an athlete should be, with the qualities, and the tool-set. He was born to be a champion. He was born to be brilliant in the field of tennis. And he’s got the tool-set as well as the championship intangible qualities like focus, hunger, and passion,” gushed Evert.
Talking about how he fits into the scheme with other young top players now. Evert said, “I think he will bring the level up of Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev and the players that are going to be the new leaders in the men’s game.”
To counter the skills, Carlos brings on court, the younger generation will have to improve in a big way. “I think Carlos will improve their game because they’re going to have to play better than their best when they play him if they want to beat him.” However, Chris was quick to add that, of course, he was not invincible. “He’s not unbeatable by any means, but at his best, he is,” said the 68-year-old American.
