Tennis icons Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert were the power couple of the 70s. They were the most talked about couple in the tennis fraternity and were due to get married soon. They were the Wimbledon 1974 champions in men’s and women’s singles respectively having gotten engaged just a few months ago.

But to everyone’s surprise, they called the wedding off the real reason for which wasn’t public till the next few years. Later, it was revealed that Connors was very unhappy with Evert getting an abortion without discussing the matter with him. Connors, in his book The Outsider, discussed the whole incident in detail and blamed Evert for the split.

“An issue had arisen as a result of youthful passion, and a decision had to be made as a couple. Chrissie called to say she was taking care of the ‘issue’,” he wrote in the book. “I was happy to let nature take its course. It was a horrible feeling, but I knew it was over. Getting married wasn’t going to be good for us.”

In 1974, when Evert got aborted, she was just 19 years old while Connors was 22. When he revealed this information back in 2013, the eyes of the world were once again on Evert. She expressed her disappointment in the matter and bashed him saying that he has misrepresented a private matter that took place 40 years ago.

“I am extremely disappointed he has misrepresented a private matter that took place 40 years ago,” Evert said back in 2013 when she was under immense media attention.
