Chris Evert talks about the “warrior” mentality of Rafael Nadal.
Chris Evert and Rafael Nadal
American Former World No.1 Chris Evert appreciates the longevity of Rafael Nadal and his unmatched grit and determination that kept him inside Top-10 for these many years. As she was talking in a recent interview, the tennis legend also gives her views on the future of the Spanish Great citing his recent injury concerns and aging body.
As Chris Evert said, “18 years in the top 10! To have that motivation and to never wane in your desire and dedication to the sport, to be in the top 10 when there is so much depth, I think that just says a lot about what is happening in his head. It also reflects in his game because it is about consistency, being solid, not missing a ball, and being in every point. He is in every point and he has been in the top 10 every year. That is just tunnel vision.”
The American legend continued, “I think motivation is big: to have that motivation year in and year out, to be the best you can be, win as many tournaments as you can, to have that motivation and not any dips in that, in your desire to compete.” (Source: Eurosport)
Rafael Nadal- The secret project designed in Mallorcan labs to rule the tennis world
The Spanish Great Rafael Nadal came into the limelight in 2005 when he first won his French Open title. From then on, he continued inside the top-10 rankings for 18 long years. This unmatched consistency itself is enough to make Nadal equal to tennis for many of his fans across the globe.
There was a time when Roger Federer was invincible and he was ruling the tennis courts all over the world. The peak he had between 2004 and 2007 still makes him relevant in the GOAT debate despite going below Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in most of the stats.
Federer won 3 out of 4 Australian Open titles, won all 4 Wimbledon titles, and US open titles between 2004 and 2007. That is 11 out of 16 slams won in four years. 3 of the slams Federer lost in this period were against Nadal in the French Opens. Nadal came like he was designed in a lab to beat Federer.
It seemed like Nadal was a secret project to take down Federer. He single-handedly stopped the dominance of the Swiss legend. The ‘Fedal’ rivalry took a new high when Federer finally defeated Nadal in a Grand slam match in the 2017 Australian Open final.
Nadal leads the head-to-head against Federer 24-16 but trails his other biggest rival Novak Djokovic 29-30. In the Grand Slam head-to-head, he leads bother Federer and Djokovic 10-4 and 11-7 respectively.
