The US crowd has been sitting in great anticipation for the last one and a half years. However, the wait is now over as Novak Djokovic finally returns as the restrictions on the COVID vaccines have been lifted.
Djokovic will come up against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his Round of 32 contest at the Cincinnati Masters. The last time he competed in a singles match in the States was in 2021 when he faced Daniil Medvedev in the final of the US Open.

Davidovich Fokina will know that the crowd will be in favor of Djokovic as his return is the talking point. However, the Spaniard has been impressive in the last few months and will bank on that confidence to help him get through this contest. He knocked out third seed Casper Ruud last week in Toronto and made it to the semi-finals. He also had a good run at the Wimbledon Championships, where he fell inches short of victory in a tough 5-setter against Holger Rune.
On the other hand, Djokovic will look to start his American court return in fine fashion. Djokovic has had a mixed season with great performances in Grand Slams, winning both the Australian Open and the Roland Garros and losing in the final of Wimbledon.
However, apart from that, the Serb hasn’t really lived up to his standards. He had already played a doubles match at Cincinnati, which he lost. The Serb must have gained some important knowledge of the court as he heads into his first singles match in the States in almost two years.
The pair have met on three previous occasions. All three matches were on clay. The first of them was at the Italian Open in 2021, where Djokovic thrashed the Spaniard 6-2, 6-1. Davidovich Fokina found a response the following year in Monte Carlo, where he beat the Serb in a strong three-set encounter. The pair most recently met in Paris at this year’s French Open. Djokovic won in three straight sets but had to fight off two tiebreakers.

The pressure will certainly be on Djokovic this time. However, as he has always done, one can back the Serb to stay mentally strong and fight it out. Even though Djokovic holds a slender lead in the head-to-head and also has immense success in Cincinnati, beating Davidovich Fokina won’t be a cakewalk. Expect the Spaniard to take a set.
