After a first-round win, Djokovic faced Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round. During their play, Djokovic secured a service break to make the first set 4-3. His opponent had to take a medical break due to a physical problem. When play restarted, there were three straight serve breaks, and Djokovic eventually won the first set. Due to a back ailment, Davidovich Fokina retired, allowing Djokovic to advance to the third round.

Monfils, on the other hand, overcame Cameron Norrie in three sets to advance to the second round. He then faced Alex de Minaur, the runner-up in the Canadian Open last week.

Monfils saved a break point in the first set to tie the match at 4-4. Despite de Minaur’s wasted opportunity, Monfils won the first set by winning the final three games. Monfils took an early break in the second set and went on to lead 4-2. Despite missing a few of match points on de Minaur’s serve, Monfils went on to win the match 7-5, 6-4 in the next game.

Monfils’ recent revival continued with an excellent win over the in-form de Minaur. In the previous round, he kept his serve unbroken and exhibited the ability to match, if not outlast, his younger opponent in several long rallies.

Although both athletes’ playing styles are similar, Monfils has the ability to improve his game with well-timed spurts of aggression. Djokovic’s return to the court after his Wimbledon defeat did not provide a good indication of his present form.

Their rivalry, which has been going on since 2005, has consistently benefitted Djokovic. While Monfils is now playing admirably, it is expected that the former World No. 1 will once again have the upper hand.
