Coco Gauff vs Liudmila Samsonova: Preview
World No.7 Coco Gauff has been in the limelight for quite some time due to her dip in form in the recent tournament. Despite managing to keep hold of her rankings in the WTA rankings, she hasn’t done justice to her reputation and recognition by failing to make it to the later stages of the majority of the competitions she has played so far.
She has hit absolute rock bottom in the last few months, from losing 11 matches on the trot to sacking her father as a coach. She also had to go through a few allegations of match-fixing being put up against her. Her only notable performance this year involves her ASB Classic win right at the start of the year and since then it has been completely dry in terms of titles from her.
In the ongoing Citi Open, she beat Hailey Baptiste in the first-round matchup by 6-1, 6-4, and then went on to beat Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals by 6-1, 6-2.
On the other hand, eight-seed Liudmila Samsonova is not a name tennis fans would hear very often. She has still not made it big enough yet in her short career and having currently placed 18 in the WTA rankings, she still has a long way to go. Her only recognizable performance came at the Abu Dhabi Open where she made it to the finals beating the likes of Claire Liu, Barbora Krejcikova, Veronika Kudermetova, and Qinwen Zheng on the way.
But eventually, she fell short of the title losing to the Swiss star, Belinda Bencic in the final. Her other performances involve only first-round knockouts or disappointing early-round finishes. She also made it to the quarter-finals on two occasions, one at the Hertogenbosch Open in the Netherlands where she retired midway through the match due to injury against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and another one at the Bad Homburg Open where he lost against Katerina Siniakova.
In the ongoing Citi Open, she beat Danielle Collins in the first-round matchup by 6-1, 6-3, and then went on to beat Sorana Cirstea in the round of 16 matchup by 6-1, 6-3. In her last round, at the quarter-finals, she beat Marta Kostyuk by 6-4, 6-2.
Gauff and Samsonova have faced each other twice in the past with Gauff winning on both occasions.
Coco Gauff vs Liudmila Samsonova: Prediction
Coco Gauff has looked far more dominant and aggressive than she has ever been in the whole of this year at the ongoing Citi Open. She looks to have found her touch back after a string of rough performances in the last few months. And with a comparatively lowly ranked player as her semi-final opponent, she is set to prevail against the Russian. Expect a good match with Coco moving into the next round.
Prediction: Gauff to win in two sets.
