World No. 4 Jessica Pegula will try to bank on another crucial performance she picked up in her last matchup against Elina Svitolina on Friday. She has been struggling for consistency this year with just one final appearance so far. She might be ranked in the top four for a long time, but her performances seem to have not done justice to that seedings. Having an empty cabinet this year, it’s a very disappointing aspect for a player of Pegula’s caliber.

Having failed to capitalize on her good starts in every single tournament, she is yet to wrap up a single title which is not a good sign by any means for a player like her making it a major sign of worry for her fans as well. Her best finish this year so far has been the final appearance at the Qatar Open where she lost to Iga Swiatek. And she also made it to the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Charleston Open, and the Miami Open. Her other finishes include the quarter-final finishes at the Australian Open, the Madrid Open, Eastbourne International, and the recently played Wimbledon Championships.

In the ongoing Citi Open, she beat Peyton Stearns in the first-round matchup by 6-3, 6-4, and then went on to beat Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals by 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

On the other hand, World No. 9 Maria Sakkari has not quite had the year she would have hoped for at the start of the season. She has not been able to make a single final appearance this year letting her fans down considerably. Sakkari’s form in the last few tournaments has also been a sign of worry as she has either been knocked in the first round or has failed to make it to the later stages.

She has made it to the semi-finals this year on five occasions losing every single of them. In her first semi-final appearance of the year, at the Linz Open, she lost to Petra Martic despite going a set up, then at the Qatar Open, she lost to Jessica Pegula. After that at the Indian Wells Masters, she lost against Aryna Sabalenka on straight sets and to Sabalenka again at the Madrid Open two months later.

In her recent participation at the Berlin Grass Court Championships, she failed to make it to the final yet again losing to Donna Vekic. And being placed in the same stage in the Citi Open, all the odds are against Sakkari but the Greek will hope to overcome the semi-final mark for the first time this year breaking the curse that she has been clinging onto for far too long.

In the ongoing Citi Open, she beat Leylah Annie Fernandez in the first-round matchup by 7-5, 6-2, and then went on to beat Madison Keys in the quarter-finals by 6-3, 6-3.

Svitolina and Pegula have faced each other seven times in the past with Pegula winning thrice and Sakkari winning on four occasions.

Jessica Pegula will go in as the favorite to win the match given her experience and record in the competition. She is one of the best players in the world and has proven herself on hard court although she is more or less an all-court player. Though Sakkari has not yet dropped a single set in the competition, the first-seeded Pegula will have an upper hand. Expect a good match with Pegula moving into the next round.

Prediction: Pegula to win in three sets.
